Edition:

We are grateful to Prof. Riccardo Lattuada for endorsing the attribution to Ribera based on digital images. He dates the painting to circa or just after 1620, the period Ribera painted his series of Apostles for the Church of San Girolamini,1 and the Saints Peter and Paul today in the Muse des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg.2 This seems more convincing than the later date of circa 1643 proposed by Spinosa (see Literature).
